Why Do Some People Think They Can’t Sing?

Updated: Mar 12, 2021

Most people tend to mistakenly think they can’t sing. Why? Maybe they have trouble reading notes or they lack a certain vocal range. What they don’t know, however, is that many of the problems people have with their singing capabilities can actually be corrected or improved with proper and thorough training. Your vocal cords are muscles that be manipulated over time to improve sound production and control. Singing in a choir with a group of your peers, many of whom also have limited singing or performance experience, can help you overcome your stage fright and focus on learning new techniques to improve your vocal control.

Myths That Make People Think They Can’t Sing

First of all, it’s important to point out the fact that thinking you can’t sing is a myth in and of itself. Everybody can sing. It’s just a matter of training your voice based on your personal capabilities. Here’s a list of other myths that often have people convinced they can’t sing.

“I’m Tone Deaf”

People who don’t sing professionally or lack vocal training occasionally think they’re tone deaf. But the reality is that only about 1.5% to 4% of people are actually tone deaf or suffer from some form of musical amusia (the congenital inability to hear pitch properly or at all). The rest of us only think we’re tone deaf because we lack proper vocal training and control, which is a practiced art form.

You most likely have the ability to hear and differentiate between notes; you probably just can’t reproduce them and that’s a lot more common than you think. Oftentimes, people mistake their inability to reproduce notes with tone deafness, but it’s not the same thing. The truth is that you just need to train your voice to hit those notes or work within your specific vocal range.

“My Voice Sounds Terrible”

Here’s the thing about your singing voice: it’s probably not everyone’s cup of tea. While this is true, that doesn’t necessarily mean that you have a bad sounding singing voice altogether. It just means that people are complex and have different tastes in music. For instance, not everyone is a fan of Kelly Clarkson, Madonna, or even Freddie Mercury’s singing voice. And they’re all famous musicians with unique singing capabilities and talents!

The sound of your voice is unique, and you shouldn’t strive to make it sound like someone else’s. Vocal talent is subjective, but the techniques used to control it are universal.

“I Don’t Know How to Read Music”

The good news is you don’t have to be able to read music to train your voice and your ear! You just have to practice and listen carefully to melodies, notes, and pitches. Over time, you’ll be able to pick up certain musical patterns and follow along accordingly. Even some of the world’s best singers like Elvis, Michael Jackson, Taylor Swift, Eric Clapton, and The Beatles don’t (or didn’t) actually know how to read music!
