If you are a self-proclaimed “non-singer” or “non-musical” person, it’s understandable that singing—especially if you don’t think you’re particularly good at it—can make you feel self-conscious and vulnerable. But did you know that singing, particularly in a group setting, can also uplift you and foster a sense of community? If you’ve always enjoyed singing but are reluctant to sing publicly because you either have little to no experience/training or you think you are too old to learn, we’re here to tell you that anyone can (and should) sing at any age! Joining a singing group in Toronto or the GTA can help you gain the confidence you need to enjoy singing without feeling embarrassed or insecure!

There Is No Age Limit

Don’t let society bog you down with ideas of what you can and can’t do at your age. Not to sound too cliché, but as long as you put your mind to it and work hard at it, you can learn to sing at practically any age! Whether you’re in your 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s, and beyond, there’s no reason why you shouldn’t be allowed to relish in the joy of singing and master the technical skills to be good at it! You can learn breath control, how to sing on key, and expand your vocal range, all by joining a group choir!

Everyone Is Born with the Ability to Sing

To quote Chef Auguste Gusteau from the animated film Ratatouille, “Anyone can cook.” The same concept can be applied to singing! Everyone is born with the ability to sing; you just have to learn to harness and control that skill, even if it’s just so you can sing along to your favourite song on the radio! There are tons of non-judgemental local adult choirs that accept people with a wide range of singing abilities that can help you refine your singing and teach you new techniques. These are like special communities that bring like-minded people together and the fun doesn’t always stop after each practice session!

Singing Has Numerous Benefits for Adults

Singing has countless psychological and physiological benefits for adults. In fact, singing is a vocal workout! It can help curb depression, improve your posture, strengthen your immune system, and strengthen your palate and throat muscles, which promotes better sleep by reducing snoring.

And there is scientific evidence to prove it! A University of Frankfurt study, which tested the blood pressure of professional choir singers, showed an increased level of antibodies in the immune system after an hour-long rehearsal for “Requiem” by Mozart. The choir members were also tested after a session where they simply listened to music, but there wasn’t a noticeable difference.
